Estate of Community Leader to be Auctioned

On Friday, August 15th at 11:00 am, the estate of Mattie Lee Jones will be auctioned for development.

The family cites robust development and increased traffic in the area as reasons for their decision to sell.

McAllister Realty and JL Todd Auction Company, Inc. have been contracted by the heirs of Mrs. Jones to sell the estate, which contains 44 acres and the original Jones home place, which is over 80 years old.

Immediately following the Jones Estate sale, the adjacent two houses, which were originally part of the estate tract, will also be auctioned for sale. These two properties add additional frontage on North Brickyard road.

Mrs. Jones and her husband purchased the property in 1938 from the LeGrande estate. She resided at the property until her death in 2001. She was predeceased by her husband in 1960 and single-handedly raised five of their six children.

Mrs. Jones was a beloved fixture in the Killian community, serving on the Ebenezer Holiness Baptist Church board and on the Killian Christian School board. She also served in various capacities on the local extension board, including president for six years. For over 13 years she was a foster grandparent at the Midlands Center and was instrumental in establishing a Neighborhood Crime Watch in the Killian area. Active church and Sunday School member, she was also a volunteer fundraiser for EL Wright and Lonnie B. Nelson schools in the area. An expert quilt maker, cook and gardener, she was elected Richland County Extension Homemaker of the Year for 1990.

Neighbors and friends say that one of her greatest attributes was her sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others. Her compassion for others and Christ-like manner will be long remembered.
